Whenever you ask a woman what the number one quality she wants in a partner nine times out of ten the answer comes back as "I want a man who will make me laugh". It's not about him being hot or rich or intelligent. The answer invariably is that they want a man with a sense of humour. I have always wondered whether women were being honest when answering the question or trying to not seem shallow. My curious nature caused me to delve further into it.

Darwin wrote that women tended to choose their mates based on their perceived ability to reproduce. If a man looked like he would be able to father children then he became a wanted man. Maybe that was true then but today's woman seems to have a whole different set of criterion. Based on a recent survey of 5,000 women (including those who were in relationships) it seems like reproductive prowess is no longer the number one desirable when it comes to a woman choosing a man as a mate. The results show that a man's ability to financially support a family is now the top quality. So in modern dating the bulge in the pants that means the most to women is the wallet. A female friend of mine agreed with these findings as she told me, "My mom always said it is just as easy to fall in love with a rich man as it is with a poor man." Is this shallow or is it just women looking out for themselves?

I began to inquire with some male friends as to whether it bothered them that women fell in love with their bank accounts rather than with them. But after some precursory studies I found out that men do not really mind. I think it is because they think it going to allow the less attractive men who have money to catch the babes who otherwise might not have given then a second glance. Or will allow them to get away more easily with their own shallowness.

So back to the whole sense of humour thing - it was none other than the paragon of female sexuality, Marilyn Monroe who said that "If you can make a woman laugh, you can make her do anything." This seemed more and more reasonable to me as I went on. Especially in these times of economic downturns, a sense of humour will never go away no matter how the New York Stock Exchange is doing. Laughter truly can be the best medicine in a relationship.

Women really are the superior of the two sexes. They know that the luster of money will eventually wear away if that is all a man possesses. The ability to communicate and laugh together will get a couple through all the tough times that inevitably will come. Women have realized that life is not a Jane Austen novel and that social status really doesn't mean anything. Having money is a good thing but it is not everything.
