Ever since the release of her debut album this year people have been trying to figure out Anna Calvi.  The British electric guitarist/singer is not a musical act that you can easily pigeonhole into one category or another.  Whatever she is doing she is doing it right as her debut album, Anna Calvi, was nominated for both the prestigious Mercury Prize and BBC’s Sound of 2011 awards.

She began playing the violin at the age of 6 and then moved on to guitar by 8.  Once she began really playing her electric guitar it was then that she allowed her influences of classical composers like Ravel and Debussy.  When she enrolled at university Anna first began a degree in Arts and then moved on to Music.

Anna began playing gigs during her time in university and her music caught the attention of none other than Brian Eno.  He soon was saying that she was going to be the biggest thing since Patti Smith.  In 2010 she toured with Arctic Monkeys and Interpol.

Her debut album was released in January of 2011 and it was immediately a success across Europe.  In her live shows she has gained a reputation for being intense and seductive.  On stage she always dresses in flamenco inspired clothing and bright red lipstick.

Quickly she gained quite reputation as a virtuoso guitar player.  Anna always plays a Fender Telecaster and instead of strumming she hits the strings in a circular motion.  This orchestral approach to guitar playing really lends itself to her dark and atmospheric pop music.
