The Montreal World Film Festival will present its 35th edition lineup a little bit earlier this year as it is set to begin on August 18th and will run until August 28th. The MWFF has quite a lineup in store for audiences, with over 350 films from over 70 countries, which includes 107 world or international premieres and 51 North American premieres.

In the World Competition section, the MWFF will kick off the festival with “Coteau Rouge,” starring Roy Dupuis, Celine Bonnier and Gaston Lepage spinning a tale surrounding some very particular characters. Many of you may have seen the 2004 Grand Prize film “The Syrian Bride” by director Eran Riklis. He returns to the festival with a new film entitled “Playoff” in which an Israeli basketball coach, also a Holocaust survivor accepts an offer to manage the German national team. “Black Thursday” by Antoni Krauze gives viewers a look into protests against the old regime in Poland. For those of you interested in Asian films, the competition section offers up “The Law of Attraction” by Chinese director Zhao Tiantyu, who presents a portrait of urban love which follows four stories, one more complex than the next.

The First Films World competition will screen 26 features from 21 countries such as Belgium, India, Italy, Mexico, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Venezuela.

The MWFF will also have a vast array of short films and a significant number of documentaries from directors from all corners of the planet as well, giving viewers a chance to see the world through the eyes of people with different perspectives on various topics.

Every year, the festival honors artists who have made a significant contribution to the industry. This year the legendary Catherine Deneuve has been selected, along with Ginette Reno and Claude Lelouch.

The MWFF continues its tradition of free outdoor screenings at the Quartier des spectacles plaza on Jeanne-Mance beside the Place des Arts. If you are a fan of Bollywood films, then make sure to mark your calendars to catch a screening. Also featured will be Hollywood musical classics and a special screening of “The Young Girls of Rochefort” in tribute to Catherine Deneuve.
