Inspired by the Henry James novella "The Pupil", Montreal playwright Michael Mackenzie has written "Geometry in Venice". Mackenzie's play is a period piece that takes place towards the end of the 19th century. It is about an aristocratic British family living in Venice who is willing to try anything to keep up with the Jones. They have hired a Canadian born would-be writer to educate their son, who is not well physically, but is a genius. They also bring their of marrying age daughter around from salon to salon across Europe in the hopes of finding her a wealthy suitor. It becomes clear that the family is not as wealthy as they would like others to believe when they fail to pay the tutor. The Moreen's are a family in financial and moral crisis.
The story is a touching look at one family's obsession with status and wealth. The family is in trouble from the beginning of the play and it is no surprise when their house of cards comes tumbling down. You will alternate between feeling sorry for the Moreens to being completely frustrated with them. Most importantly you will be involved in what is happening before you.
