For those nights when you want to just pick up some sushi, bring it home and not pay an arm and a leg then the many conveniently located Sushi Shops is your answer. My friends and I went to the location at the Atwater Market, but they are all fairly similar. The rather large menu at Sushi Shop includes things such as soups, salads, maki, sumomaki, sushi desserts, tartare maki, Fuji bowls, hosomaki, sashimi, nigiri, inari, and spring maki. With 151 items on the menu you will never get bored.
The sushi at Sushi Shop is made daily (prepackaged meals) or if you prefer they will make it fresh for you. Sushi is very good for you and Sushi Shop prides themselves on making 'fast' food that is good for you. The sushi is low in cholesterol and a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids plus a variety of vitamins.
To make it even more convenient and indispensable Sushi Shop offers catering services if you are having large events and delivery when you don't want to leave your house. With a variety of platters ranging from 25 pieces ($14.95) to 100 pieces ($84.95) they can prepare enough for any size group. For delivery you have to go through the A La Carte Express service in Montreal.
At lunch time they have their inexpensive Midi Express Lunch (11:00 a.m.-2 p.m.). There are five 11 piece combos that range in price from $5-75 - $7.65. The rest of the time they are open they have Express Combos (ranging in price from $7.85 - $22.25), Brown Rice Combo ($10.55) and the Bento Box Express ($8.95).
When you go to the sushi shop or look online at their menu everything is clearly laid out for you in bright colours. The menu lets you know quickly through symbols which are the new recipes, vegetarian or feature cooked fish. All sushi with rice is available in brown or white rice.
I began my meal with an order of Edamame beans ($3.95) while the other 3 girls had the Miso soup ($2.60). Miso is the best known of the Japanese soups and drank in huge quantities over there. This clear soup is made from soybean paste it has plenty of health benefits like being a great source of protein, iron and zinc.
Next up was the sushi. There are over a hundred kinds, so it is the perfect place to go to as a group and order a bunch of different kinds in order to try as many as possible. We ordered Kunsei Syake which comes in either the nigiri (oblong sushi rice with topping draped over it) or sashimi (thinly sliced raw fish) variety. You get 2 pieces with this selection Kunsei Syake is smoked salmon and we selected the nigiri option ($3.95)
From the Hosomaki (or small rolls of 6 pieces) section we took the Avocado ($2.45), which features avocado rolls covered with sesame seeds, and Akanasu ($3.25), which features sun-dried tomato pesto, light cream cheese and covered with sesame seeds.
Then from the Maki (medium rolls of 8 pieces) section we chose the Classic California ($5.45), which contains Japanese crabstick, avocado, cucumber, light mayo, and sesame seeds on the outside.
Next on to the Sumomaki (large rolls of 5 pieces) we chose the Inferno ($6.75), which contains tempura, light cream cheese, sun-dried tomato pesto, red and orange masago, green onion, spicy light mayo, spicy sauce, and sesame seeds on the outside, and Dynamite ($6.55), which contains shrimp tempura, avocado, cucumber, orange masago, and spicy mayo.
Our last sushi choices were from the Spring Maki (2 pieces with Ma! Vinaigrette) section and we chose the Chicken Spring Maki, which features rice-paper, rice, chicken, lettuce, cucumber, red pepper, and sesame seeds, and the Veggie Spring Maki with rice-paper, rice, tamago, lettuce, carrot, avocado, red pepper, cucumber, mint, and sesame seeds.
To round off our meal we tried a couple of the Sushi Desserts. The Geisha (3 pieces - $2.65 or 6 pieces - $4.75) with pear, clementine, strawberry, dessert rice, rice-paper served with chocolate sauce and also Ruby Mint (3 pieces - $2.65 or 6 pieces $4.75) with banana, clementine, strawberry, mint, dessert rice, rice-paper served with chocolate sauce.
For the price everything is very fresh and delicious. There are several quite inventive sushi rolls using different ingredients. The perfect "It's Friday and I don't feel like cooking" place to pick up food on your way home from work.
