Turkish Trance: Peter Murphy kicks off his world tour right here in Montreal!
Club Soda / May 5, 2002

Transcendental! Peter Murphy cast his musical spell over some six hundred fans at Club Soda last Sunday, May 5. Unlike his high-energy Musimax set (May 2, 2002), Peter chose to hypnotize his admirers early on, before breaking into the more danceable numbers such as the classic "Gliding Like a Whale". The crowd was literally entranced by Murphy's voice, Hugh Marsh's violin, Fergus Marsh's stickman bass, Levon Ichkanian's fretless guitars / UD / Turkish instruments, Rob Kilch's guitar, Mark Kelso's drums / percussion, plus an awe-inspiring handful of pre-recorded soundscapes. The audience, composed primarily of long-time devotees, swayed in a collective meditation. When we spoke with Peter before the show, he explained that the Eastern instruments were selected for their colours and subtlety. Meanwhile, his music takes full advantage of powerful bass drones that are designed to reach into "not just one, but all of the chakras". Truly the case, Murphy's lustrous stage presence was brilliantly magnified by creative stage innovations including a crystal ball effect and choreography that invoked, at times, a music box dancer, and at others, a freshly harvested soul reaching for the heavens. No surprise that Peter's insatiable following beckoned his quintet of virtuosi for three encore sets!
