The Austin Powers franchise resurfaces in Mike Myers' latest ouevre, Austin Powers in Goldmember. The third in the trilogy (so far), we're offered more of the retro British zaniness we've come to expect from the Austin Powers character: the low-brow gags, numerous celeb cameos, time travelling (into disco world 1975), song-and-dance numbers, and some new inductees into the cast of oddball characters. The best bits are in the opening sequence vis a vis pure James Bond satire, played by box office darlings Tom Cruise and Gwyneth Paltrow. The star list continues throughout with film veterans Michael Caine, Michael York, Robert Wagner; TV faves Fred Savage (The Wonder Years), Seth Green (Greg the Bunny) and Mindy Sterling; and pop superstars Beyoncé Knowles (Destiny's Child) and Britney Spears. Myers reprises his cache of well-loved characters: Austin Powers, Dr. Evil, Fat Bastard, and of course Mini Me (Verne Troyer). The latest addition is Goldmember, based on Myers' idea of the outdated European swinger who fancies himself as a sex machine. "Those guys at the beach who wear banana hammocks-the first to take off their swim trunks and dare uptight North Americans like me to show ourselves." For a mindless romp into pop culture excesses, Goldmember strikes pure gold at the box office.
