Sounding like a mixture of Cowboy Junkies and Kathleen Edwards with a sprinkle of Lucinda Williams, Lori McKenna has planted herself firmly in the alt-country soil. She is also within the female singer/songwriter category as the girl can really write emotional and perceptive lyrics. Like the title of the album alludes, this is not a 'happy' album. Most of the lyrics deal with being without hope and are downbeat. The bleakness of the lyrics is juxtaposed against the upbeat yet simple melodies on the album. Also another highlight her third album is the great instrumentalism of the players. There are great sections of guitar, mandolin and keyboard playing which stand out. If you want to listen to a bleak but interesting look at small town life sung by a woman from the South than Lori McKenna is your girl.
