More like “Live Through This”, but I digress. Toronto’s punkish new-wave ambassadors Metric sound like they just beamed in from the mid-90’s with this release, which bears more than a slight sonic resemblance to the Hole / 7 Year Bitch / Babes In Toyland sound that was so prevalent in underground music at the time. Metric sure seem to love that old quiet/loud dynamic, and they employ it quite successfully here (if not a tad repetitiously). Vocalist Emily Haines growls, whispers and shouts her way through the album’s 10 tracks, often sounding akin to Blondie’s Debbie Harry on speed. While fans may lament the more guitar-driven approach to this sophomore release, the mainstream sure seems to be paying attention, with Metric currently being hailed as Canada’s next “big thing”. Buzz continues to abound about the band’s explosive live show, so be sure to check them out when they hit the Metropolis in Montreal on March 1.
