Joe Buck (Jon Voight – Glory Road, Ali) is a pseudo-cowboy who moves from Texas to New York City. He is quite naïve and believes that he is going to make his fortune as a hustler/stud. As a child he had to 'take care' of his swinging grandmother Sally Buck (Ruth White – To Kill a Mockingbird), who raised him, so he feels that he will make money 'servicing' the wealthy women of New York. Unfortunately for him he gets mixed up with the slimy, crippled con man Ratzo Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman – Finding Neverland, Rain Man). Rizzo cons Joe into agreeing to let him 'manage' him for a $20 fee. Realizing he has been conned, Joe sets off searching for Rizzo and when he finds him he ends up getting talked into moving into Rizzo's apartment in an abandoned building. The two dream of getting rich off of Joe's 'talents'. Rizzo's health begins to deteriorate and he dreams of going to Florida. Joe is left to trying to figure out a way to get the two of them there.
The year 1969 is famous for many things including Woodstock, man walking on the moon, first album released by Led Zeppelin, Mickey Mantle retired, and the multi Oscar (Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture) winning film Midnight Cowboy. Jon Voigt and Dustin Hoffman were both nominated for their roles (neither won) and turned in probably the best performances of their lives. The supporting cast of Brenda Vaccaro (The Mirror Has Two Faces, Love Affair), Sylvia Miles (Wall Street, Evil Under the Sun) and Barnard Hughes (Oh, God, The Lost Boys) also do a fabulous job. Some more stars of the film are cinematographer Adam Holender (A Price Above Rubies, 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag) and director John Schlesinger (The Falcon and the Snowman, The Believers) for their gritty realistic portrayal of the city of New York. New York is definitely a character in this film as it plays an important role. The late 1960s and the poverty and hopelessness of some living in the Big Apple at that time are also vividly depicted by Schlesinger. To be frank, there isn't much of a story per se in this film. Midnight Cowboy is basically about the relationship between these two very different men. Without being a cop out the film leaves you wondering if they had a physical relationship or not. It is full of dreamy drug induced scenes, weird flashbacks to Joe's past, strange sound effects, and flash forwards. Everything about this film keeps the viewer a little disoriented. A classic film which is very dark, unique, risky, and made the theme song "Everybody's Talkin'" a huge hit for Harry Nilsson.
