Nelly Furtado

Hey! I thought the trend was that when female music artists had children their music became less provocative and more of the inner peace style (see Holly McNarland). Well, Nelly Furtado is one artist who is not following that trend. Loose is her third album and it is definitely her sexiest sounding and dance beat infected. This could be as a result of her choosing Timbaland (Missy Elliot, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, etc.) as the producer. She definitely sounds a lot more like Gwen Stefani on this album than the serious artist she was on her second or even the fun pop girl she was on her great debut album, Whoa! Loose is full of dance, Latin or even reggae sounds. Even the slower songs have a definite R&B sound to them. Timbaland really knows how to create beats that move you, but sometimes the beats overpower Furtado's nasally voice. Her new sound could also be a result of her being single again after splitting with her child's father. I just wonder if she will ever be able to show her kid the already in high-rotation video for the album's first single, "Promiscuous"? It caused me to say, "Whoa! Nelly". The album will do well on the charts because it is definitely the sound that today's teenager loves to download on iTunes or be 'old school' and purchase CDs of.
