I have to say that this film really surprised me. Looking at it as a Jean-Claude Van Damme straight-to-video I was dreading watching it and it actually turned out to be not that bad. It kept my attention throughout the film. Now, I am not saying that it was an instant film classic, it still is a film with Jean-Claude Van Damme, but it was not painful to watch. Director Sheldon Lettich (Lionheart, Double Impact) has worked with the Muscles from Brussels (Van Damme) several times before and seems to know how to handle him. Now that Van Damme is a little older, Lettich does not ask him to do too much hand to hand combat anymore and focuses on gun battles for the most part. There still are a couple of fights where Van Damme shows that he still can perform some of his signature kicks. Mercifully there is also none of the usual sex scenes with Van Damme and his female co-star in this film. Vivica A. Fox manages to stay out of his range for most of the film. The story is not one that you'll need a degree in nuclear physics to keep up with as most of it is fairly straight forward and predictable, but it is also not so ridiculous that you'll be rolling your eyes throughout. Which I think is a sign of a small victory for the producers of straight-to-video films.
Phillip Sauvage (Jean-Claude Van Damme – Bloodsport, Kickboxer) spent three years fighting as part of Desert Storm special forces. His time there ended badly and he was released to a veteran's hospital for psychiatric evaluation. He is hired by the sister, Tamara (Vivica A. Fox – Kill Bill:Vol. 1, Independence Day), of former world heavyweight champion, Wayne Barclay (Razaaq Adoti – Black Hawk Down, Amistad), to protect him from music mogul, Terrell Singletery (Viv Leacock – Are We There Yet?, Freddy vs. Jason). Wayne had testified against Singletery sending him to jail and now Singletery is out and wants revenge. Wayne is now a successful entrepreneur who has involved himself in the improving of the old neighbourhood he grew up in. Sauvage with ex-special forces buddy, Casey (Mark Griffin – Daddy Day Care, Dr. Dolittle 2) has to set up a team of bodyguards for Wayne including Jessie (Nneka Croal – first film), Simcoe (Ron Selmour – A Guy Thing, My Boss's Daughter), Cujo (Adrian Holmes – Two For The Money), and Kim (Aaron Au – Elektra). This team plus the two former soldiers become the Hard Corps that will try to protect Wayne Barclay.
