This album sat in the vaults for 8 long years before being released. Why do things like that happen I always wonder. Anyways…it was incredibly surprising to me when I received the album and saw it was a tribute album for a band I had never heard of before. This is pretty much the case for the band Big Star. They recorded several albums (3) but never attained any commercial success. Obviously though they made some impression upon their peers as these 10 acts all lined up to be on the album. Most of the acts heydays were in the 1990s, but that is not surprising as the album was recorded in the 90s. Some of the bands or acts are well known (Wilco, Gin Blossoms, Matthew Sweet, Juliana Hatfield) whereas some are more obscure (Idle Wilds, Whiskeytown, Kelly Willis, The Posies). The songs on the album are of varying degrees of quality from the low (Matthew Sweet, Juliana Hatfield, Gin Blossoms) to the decent (The Afghan Whigs, The Posies, Teenage Fanclub) to the very good (Whiskeytown). There is even a 'new' recording by Big Star included as the last track.
