A personnel change in 2004, with drummer Jeff Ballard coming in, led to the trio's best release ever, "Day is Done". That must have resulted in a large sigh of relief. This their next release is a continuation of that good work. It is odd however that they have gone back to a recording with their original line-up of Mehldau, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy. Pianist Brad Mehldau has written a bunch of original compositions of which the majority are quite upbeat and melodic. The intricate music gives all three members of the trio an opportunity to show off their instrumental skills. Mehldau, with his long liner notes with plentiful references to Bach, gets the opportunity to show that he is a 'serious' musician.
