Another album from this deceased artist full of mostly covers? The cynic in me wants to believe that those in charge of Johnny Cash's legacy are becoming like Tupac's mother in that they are releasing album after album of material recorded before the artist died in order cash in on the artist's reputation. But upon further investigation I found out that the 'American' series was always planned to be released and these songs were recorded just months before Cash died. I am further quieted by a listen to the music. It is quintessential Cash. Cash, the man in black, at his best. Full of power, fury and passion. It is an acoustic recording but contains all the power it needs courtesy of Cash's voice. The songs chosen and their lyrics really show an inflective Cash wondering about death, mistakes he's made and loss. A true gem is the inclusion of "Like the 309" the last song that Cash ever wrote.
