Are you perplexed about this Osheaga music festival you keep hearing about? What does this word even mean, you ask. Well, it is a Mohawk word that means 'people of shaking hands'. Well, I think there will be plenty of hands shaking not in greeting but in the air in time to the great music that will be happening all Labour Day weekend right here in Montreal. To help celebrate the last long weekend of the summer, the people at Gillette along with help from their buddies at Greenland and Higher Ground are giving us a whole weekend packed with music and art. The music and the art would mostly fall into the 'independent' category, but do not mistake that for a lack of quality; it would be more appropriate to substitute independent for interesting or innovative.
Music starts each day at 1:00 p.m. and goes on until 11:00 p.m. All the action will take place on the 4 stages set up on the site and will include sets by over 40 bands. The bands appearing include: Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, The Flaming Lips, Ben Lee, Bedouin Soundclash, Sonic Youth, k-os, Damien "Jr. Gong" Marley, Brazilian Girls, and Metric. There are many other bands so check the website to find out the complete list. As if two full days of music in the beautiful outdoors isn't enough, the organizers are also bringing in Ziggy Marley to perform an 'After-Party' show on Saturday at the Spectrum and also have organized 'After-Party' shows at Metropolis on Saturday and Sunday which will feature sets by ESG from the U.S., DJ Medhi from France, Motormark from the UK, and Ferenc from Spain amongst others.
The arts portion of the festival has a theme of "A Temporal Meeting Place" and will include works by such artists as sculptor Armand Vaillancourt of Quebec, Mark Mothersbaugh formerly of the New Wave band Devo, and urban artists HVW8. There will also be a sculpture competition in which the top 10 pieces will be in exhibition over the whole weekend.
