Keane Concert Preview

This British trio has often been compared with Coldplay, but unlike the huge success Coldplay has garnered worldwide, Keane still keeps a relatively low profile outside of their native England. With their first album "Hopes and Fears" Keane met with moderate success with the two singles "Somewhere Only We Know" and "This Is the Last Time", but nothing like what happened over in England, where it was the second best selling album in 2004. In 2005 they won several Brit Awards and Q Magazine Awards, while playing to sold out crowds and appearing at the Live 8 concert in London. What they are known mostly for in North America is opening for U2 on their last tour and being nominated for Best New Group at the 2005 Grammy Awards. Subsequently the band released a second album entitled "Under The Iron Sea", which saw 6 single releases in England. A couple of years back they played an intimate gig here in Montreal at the Outremont Theatre and it was considered by many to be one of the best shows of the year. This time round they will be playing at the slightly larger L'Olympia with opening act Rocco Deluca.

What you need to know about Keane is that they use the piano as the lead instrument in their music and forego any usage of guitars. Strange, yeah, but it certainly works for these guys. Though while listening to them you might not immediately recognize some sounds as coming from piano or keyboard due to the fact that they use much distortion and delay. Their sound is dreamlike and epic with the soaring vocals of Tom Chaplin really complimenting the band's sound. With many of their songs once you hear them they will stick in your head and not in a bad way. The melodies are very catchy and the choruses very much in the sing-along style. Their shows are high energy with plenty of interaction with the crowd. As another socially conscious band, besides Make Poverty History/Live 8, the band is also involved with the War Child people and will play at one of the Live Earth concerts to battle global warming in July.
