Ghost Rider

As a teenager Johnny Blaze (Matt Long – Sydney White) took up the family line of work as a stunt biker. He has plans to run away with his girlfriend, Roxanne (Raquel Alessi – Carlito's Way: Rise to Power), but something gets in the way. Johnny finds out that his father (Brett Cullen – Gridiron Gang, The Replacements) has terminal cancer, so he makes a pact with the Devil (Peter Fonda – Ulee's Gold, Wild Hogs) in order to save his father's life. The only price for the life is Johnny's soul. He also has to break things off with Roxanne.

As an adult Johnny (Nicholas Cage – Adaptation, Leaving Las Vegas) is still a stunt rider, but by night he is the Ghost Rider, doing the bidding of the Devil. His job is to locate the evil souls of the world and to bring them to the Devil in Hell. By a twist of fate a grown-up Roxanne (Eva Mendes – Hitch, Training Day) is back in his life and Johnny begins to wonder if he is being granted a second chance at a happy life. Can he defeat the devil and win back his soul? In order to do this he will have to go up against Blackheart (Wes Bentley – American Beauty, The Four Feathers), who is the Devil's greatest foe and also his son who wants to take over from daddy, and defeat him. If Ghost Rider is defeated that will mean that Hell is brought to Earth.

Another film made from a beloved and popular Marvel Comic Book character and another disappointment for fans. The story is silly and the acting is fairly awful. Even the action scenes in director Mark Steven Johnson's (Daredevil, Simon Birch) film are lame. (After this film and Daredevil maybe Stan Lee should keep Johnson away from his characters.) The bad guys are defeated too easily, sometimes with one punch. All the different demons with their powers of water, wind, etc. do ridiculously weak/stupid things and never pose a threat. I know that everyone knows that good always defeats evil in films like this, but can we have a little tension or suspense? Cause if that is taken away then what is left? Nicholas Cage's acting style (laid back and fairly wooden) is a bonus in certain films, but in this one I had to look away from the screen in embarrassment during a couple of scenes. The one positive thing I have to say about the film is that the Ghost Rider and the special effects involved with him are fairly cool. Is that enough of a reason to watch the film? I don't know. Maybe if you get to see it for free or there is nothing else left at the video store.
