Since they formed in 1991 the British trio Portishead have been about sampling, scratching, hip hop beats, bass, and remixes. They have become one of the leading trip hop bands for alt-rockers. Their music has been played and used anywhere from commercials to lounges. Tired of the spotlight Portishead members went their separate ways and their fans did not expect to hear from them again.
Now in 2008 thankfully they have got together to record another album. Distancing themselves from the music they have typically done before this album is darker and kinda like a soundtrack to a creepy film. They sound like no one else out there. Gone are the trip hop beats and heavy bass lines. The sound is now frail and the treble is emphasized. The distortion and stopping and starting might be frustrating for some at first, but really becomes alluring after a couple of listens.
