When you are born to parents like Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle you know almost from birth that you are not going to be your typical kid. Martha Wainwright has not a typical bone in her body. Immersed in the arts and music since birth, at first she went against the grain and decided not to play music, but rather to study drama at Concordia University. Soon her musical genes kicked in and she was playing gigs in small Montreal area coffee houses. She has not stopped since.
Moving from Montreal to New York (boo!) she recorded a solo album in 1997, toured with her brother Rufus, joined a band, and finally settled on going it solo. After a critically acclaimed debut EP in 2005 she came back with another wow-inducing self-titled full-length album that same year. This month she has released the anticipated album "I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too". Besides the obvious originals there are two intriguing covers, Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play" and The Eurythmics "Love Is A Stranger", on the album. There are also appearances by Pete Townshend, Rufus Wainwright and Kate and Anna McGarrigle on the album.
Hot off an appearance at the über-cool SXSW festival in Texas, Martha returns to her ville natale for a live show. While she is an able guitar player what you go to her shows for is to hear that voice. It is remarkable. Magically she is able to constantly change key, play with phrasing and keep a depth to her voice that will blow you away. Everything about her shows seems spontaneous and is guaranteed fun.
