Rounding up some of her oldest and most talented friends, Emmylou Harris recorded her second album for her new label, Nonesuch. Listening to the album you totally understand why she is so well-respected around the entire music industry and was inducted into the Country Music Association Hall of Fame in 2008. With nary a misstep each of her albums is a wonder.
On this album she has chosen to cover songs all about loss and full of melancholy, but also with a sense of redemption to them. It never gets too dark and like her career, there is no regret here. It never ceases to amaze how she can breathe new life into songs. There are some Harris penned songs on the album, but they too fit into that theme of redemption that is woven throughout.
A wide variety of people from different walks of the music world appear on the album. Dolly Parton, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Pam Rose, and Maryann Kennedy.
Blessed with a clear and easily identifiable voice, a superiour talent for songwriting, and confident enough in her own abilities to be at ease singing other musicians songs, Emmylou is a living musical icon. She is intelligent, talented, mature, and wonderful to listen to.
