Canada is known for hockey excellence and not so much for soccer. Well, the latest version of our national men's soccer squad is trying its best to change that preconceived notion.
In order to qualify for the next World Cup in 2010 in South Africa competition our men in red have go through several rounds. They made it through the first round and second round now face a much more difficult task in the third round. Unfortunately they are in the so-called "Group of Death" or Group B along with Jamaica, Honduras and Mexico. They have already played Jamaica here in Toronto and tied them 1-1, so a win is crucial for Canada.
Honduras is Canada's next opponent and they will be playing them right here in Montreal at Saputo Stadium. Canada is ahead of the higher ranked Hondurans in the standings because Honduras lost to Mexico 2-1 in their opener.
In preparation for the important match Canadian coach Dale Mitchell has had almost all his team here in Montreal for a week to practice together. Important players to watch will be defender Jim Brennan (Toronto FC), midfielder Julian de Guzman (Deportiva La Coruna), midfielder/forward Dwayne De Rosario (Houston Dynamo), defender/midfielder Paul Stalteri (Tottenham Hotspurs), and forward Ali Gerba (Milton Keynes Don FC).
