Considering Ryan Adams is one of the most respected and prolific songwriters of his generation it is odd to hear a straightforward album from him. Normally from this guy you expect him to jump from genre to genre and just generally confuse newcomers and fans alike. This album is almost accessible and filled with simple melodies. I guess going through rehab has truly given him a new outlook on life.
While listening to this album I was creeped out at times with how much Adams sounds like a young Neil Young. It's somewhat eerie. This solid album is filled with the sounds of classic rock that have obviously been influenced by the likes of The Grateful Dead, The Eagles, Neil Young, and even U2. The music on it will not find itself victim to styles or trends – meaning that you will be able to pick it up years from now and still enjoy it.
