Starting up in 1995 this Montreal-based band was one of the first bright lights on the then emerging Canadian indie music scene. The band can be seen as the godfathers of the present Canadian indie music scene. From the beginning the band was darlings of the critics. That is not to say that they did not have an ardent fanbase because they did.
Like several of the other conglomerate Canadian music groups (Broken Social Scene) the Dears lineup has always been a fluid one with people coming and going. However at the end of 2008 the band's makeup changed radically. All that is left is guitarist/vocalist Murray Lightburn and Natalia Yanchak. Two touring members, Lisa Smith and Laura Wills (of Pony Up), have also been added. We'll see how this affects their previously largely orchestral sound. Though their last album was fairly raw, acoustic and stripped down.
Whatever the lineup is or will be, the thing I can guarantee you about a Dears live show is that it will be powerful.
