Every weekend during the month of February in the city of Ottawa Winterlude will be taking place. This is their version of Quebec City's Carnival with skating on the Rideau Canal, ice sculptures, concerts, and a playground made entirely of snow.
Winterlude is for the whole family with activities for every age. It celebrates Canadian culture and winter. Each year more than 650,000 people attend the festival. The activities include the Ukiuk sound and light show, the Snowbowl will feature live concerts by the likes of Colin James, Murray McLauchlan, The Jim Cuddy Band, Ariane Moffat, Jully Black, and Roch Voisine, Rideau Canal Skate, Winterlude Triathlon, the Bedzz Annual Bed Race, workshops, skating demonstrations, Rogers Crystal Garden featuring ice sculptures, and the Sun Life Snowflake Region which has a maze, downhill skiing for young kids, a giant slide, an introduction to ice fishing for kids, a tethered hot air balloon, and other fun stuff.
While you are in Ottawa try out some of the local restaurants who are participating in Taste of Winterlude. Several restaurants will have special menus and prix-fixe menus just for the Winterlude. The table d'hotes at participating restaurants will range in price from $25-$65 for three courses.
The Winterlude mascots, the Ice Hogs, will be there to greet you, so take the short drive on over to Ottawa to check it out.
