They say that a family that plays together stays together. Well, this advice has proven true for the musical Rankin Family from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. They have translated their musical talent and closeness into many awards including 15 East Coast Awards, 6 Juno Awards, 4 SOCAN Awards, 3 Canadian Country Music Awards, and 2 Big Country Music Awards.
Coming from a family of 12 the Rankin kids when they were young used to entertain their neighbours with a weekly ceilidh. They first formed as a group in 1970 with 5 of the siblings playing at events and weddings. When the older siblings went away to school the younger ones took over.
They released their first independently produced albums in 1989 and 1990. Their musical style is a combination of Celtic folk songs, jigs, reels, and original songs. In 1999 the band broke up and then shortly after in 2000 John Morris Rankin was killed in a car accident. In 2006 the family got back together with John Morris's daughter Molly joining the group. After a successful album release and cross country tour they took a break again.
Now in 2009 they have released a new album "These Are the Moments" and have begun a reunion tour.
