Back together with producer Todd Rundgren, New York Dolls recently released their fourth studio album. The present-day Dolls feature original members David Johansen (vocals) and Sylvain Sylvain (guitar) and newer members Steve Conte (guitar), Brian Delaney (drums), and Sami Yaffa (bass). The new guys are no slackers as they carry their own weight by co-writing some songs and providing some great musicianship. Johansen's voice hasn't lost anything over the years and he still sounds great.
The 12 songs are shimmering examples of old fashioned rock 'n roll music. Their signature sound is still alive and kicking. Makes you wonder what they would have contributed to the music world if they had not broken up. They even have included an ode to themselves in the reworking of their 1973 hit "Trash". Though don't be a doubter as there is no trash to be found here.
