Rolling Stone magazine's 2008 choice as Best Prog-Rock band and Grammy nominees, The Mars Volta take more risks than your average band. This is their debut album on the Warner Brothers label. It is actually their fifth album and they've gone the acoustic route on this one. This is a band who goes whatever way their creative juices flow. They don't try things they have previously done, but rather constantly venture out into new territory. What has remained a constant throughout all their recordings is the fact that they are a highly artistic band.
Most of the songs on this CD are of the ballad variety with each song building towards an impact filled ending. The slower pace allows lead singer Cedric Bixler Zavala to really emphasize each and every word. Because the songs are slower does not mean that their signature psychedelic sound is not there. There is still an edge to it.
