Hard to believe that this popular punk band has been around for 22 years as they still are like kids. A trio comprised of vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, drummer Tre Cool and bassist Mike Dirnt, Green Day really burst into the record buying consciousness with the release in 1994 of the album "Dookie".
They along with The Offspring and Rancid have been credited with bringing punk music back into the mainstream. While some would argue about labelling them punk rockers, you can certainly hear influences in their music by bands like The Clash, Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Who, and Cheap Trick. However you label them they are one of the more successful American bands since the mid-90s and have gone on to win three Grammy Awards and sell 22 million albums in the U.S. alone.
Most of the band's fans are young and can relate to the sentiment behind hits like "When I Come Around", "Basket Case", "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)", "Minority", and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams". But, in the vein of punk rock, they are also not afraid of delving into political commentary with songs like "American Idiot", a blatant anti-Bush song.
