500 Days of Summer

So well done this movie is that we root for our couple even though we know they are doomed to fail. That is quite an accomplishment by screenwriters Scott Newscaster (The Pink Panther 2) and Michael H. Weber (The Pink Panther 2), director Marc Webb (first film) and lead actors Zooey Deschanel (Yes Man, The Happening) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, Miracle at St. Anna). It is not your typical romantic film and we love it just for that reason and many others.

Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a greeting card writer and a person who doesn't believe his life will be complete until he meets the woman of his dreams, falls in love at first sight with his boss's new assistant, Summer (Zooey Deschanel). The snag is that Summer does not believe in love and does not even want a boyfriend.

A relationship begins but Summer insists on it remaining casual and that they are still just friends. But by day 185 of their relationship we can see that they are not going to make it. Tom forges ahead because he is a man in love and is blinded by it.

Love is probably the most convoluted of the emotions. It is not easy to explain or decipher. Many a poet, writer or film director has tried to capture its essence and many have failed. That is what is so attractive about it – that it is elusive and defies description. It is something that means something different to every person who feels it.

Marc Webb's film tries to make sense of love and describe how it makes different people feel. The film makes love seem complex, painful, a cruel companion, and won't always make us happy. Despite all this we all desperately want to love and be loved. We will go to any lengths for it. Most of us are Tom.

We go backwards and forwards through the entire 500 days of Summer and Tom's relationship in a non-linear way. Through its ups and downs and high and low points. We are dewy eyed with them and our hearts break when theirs do. Most important this is a film that is not like many others and we fall in love with it for that very reason. And this is a relationship that is going to last more than 500 days.
