Despite the fact that this film had a ton of voice talent behind it like Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogan, Keifer Sutherland, Rainn Wilson, Will Arnett, Paul Rudd, and Stephen Colbert in the end the jokes were kind of tame and did not happen often enough for my liking. It is definitely a run of the mill animated film that you have to see in 3D to make it worth the trip to the theatre.
This film will induce medium enjoyment from the audience. The story is not the greatest, the jokes (other than a few good ones from Dr. Cockroach and BOB) are too few and they just seem to play it safe throughout. I have to say that since this film was produced by Dreamworks, who usually turn our high quality animation, I was a little disappointed.
From the get go you know everything that will happen in the film and it becomes a bit of a predictable bore. Girl next door Susan is at her wedding day and suddenly gets hit by a meteor that has fallen from outer space. The meteor causes her to grow to 55 feet tall. Susan is taken into custody by the United States government and meets several other 'monsters' that they have hidden away from the general public. The monsters are given the opportunity to be heroes when the government proposes to use them to fight off aliens who are invading Earth. What you are hoping will save the weak story are a rash of hilarious jokes. And while there are a few belly laughs of the silly variety they are not enough.
Hugh Laurie (House) as Dr. Cockroach Ph.D and Seth Rogan (Superbad, Pineapple Express) as BOB steal the movie out from under Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde, Walk the Line). Laurie actually uses his British accent and is completely over the top as the mad scientist Dr. Cockroach and Seth Rogan's gravelly stoner voice is perfect as the dimwitted BOB.
Not a bad film, but not great either. Just good. And on this night that wasn't enough for me.
