Oy Vey! My Son is Gay! @ Image + Nation

If you are looking for a good laugh then go see this film screening at Image + Nation on Sunday, October 25th.

According to the director and producer, it took eight years to make the film. Looks like it was worth it as it was an enjoyable film with lots of laughs throughout.

Shirley (Lainie Kazan) and Martin Hirsch (Saul Rubinek) have been trying to find a nice Jewish girl for their son Nelson but during one of the set-ups, he announces to that he already has someone. His parents are thrilled and can't wait to meet his girlfriend. Shirley shows up at his apartment and is greeted by Angelo (Jai Rodruiguez), Nelson's live-in boyfriend. He introduces himself as Nelson's decorator and she mistakes his neighbor Sybil (Carmen Electra) as his girlfriend. His Dad cannot believe that his son found a girl like her (she is a pin up model) and wonders how the family is going to react to the news.

Meanwhile, Nelson tries to tell his parents the truth but there always seems to be some reason he is unable to get the message across. Eventually he does "come out of the closet" and his parents are totally shocked because they had absolutely no idea. Now the tough part for them is how to deal with it.

They try to find out more about their son's lifestyle by going to a therapist, speaking to a couple of young guys who are part of an organization that educates people about how to deal with a member of the family who is gay. His Dad even goes to a gay bar and gets more than he bargained for as he tries to understand things from his son's perspective.

To make matters more complicated, Angelo is upset that Nelson seems to not be comfortable in letting the world know about them so this causes tension between the couple. Tensions continue to escalate until the couple makes a decision that will affect their lives and those of their families.

This film is well written and has a really good cast. Standout performances by Laine Kazan and Saul Rubinek. Laine had some of the best lines in the film. If you get a chance to see it, do check it out.
