30 Seconds to Mars

Since when did emo music feature choirs? Is this normal? 30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto is certainly going for the drama with this release. Many of the songs on the album feature his lead vocals backed by a choir of voices, whether it be Tibetan monks or a group of fans. Just sounds odd.

Everything about the album seems agitated with its over-the-top guitar work and loud percussion. The music though does match the torment behind the lyrics. Though instead of coming together to form a match made in heaven, it was like I was in the 5th level of hell while I listened to the band's third album. All Leto was getting across to me was that every song on the album sounds like he is throwing a tantrum. He and the band do attempt to be more goth on the album, but it ended up coming off as disturbing for me.

They also used very in demand producer Flood (U2, Depeche Mode, NIN) to help them with the album, but it just sounds like he was hired to make them sound like these bands. Comes off as verging on pathetic.
