English singer-songwriter David Gray burst onto the scene with the release of his album "White Ladder" and the hit single "Babylon" in 1999. Almost 20 years into his career he has had a nice time of it.
Gray's career started like most musicians – slowly. He released his first two albums in 1993 and 1994 to not much notice. His first couple of album releases were of the folk-rock music variety and he became well know in those music circles, but garnered little commercial success. By the time her released his third album in 1996, "Sell, Sell, Sell" he began to produce music of the type we have come to know him for. It was a combination of folk, alt rock and electronics. The album resulted in plenty of critical acclaim for Gray, but still no breakthrough.
This all changed with the release of "White Ladder". Due to its hit singles, "Babylon", "This Year's Love" and "Please Forgive Me", Gray had his first mainstream success. The three singles were Top 20 hits in the U.K. and two were Top 20 in the U.S. His subsequent album release "A New Day at Midnight" while not as popular also moved many copies. Things have gone along at this quieter pace with a couple of hiatuses until last fall when he released his latest album, "Draw the Line" which featured a duet with Annie Lennox.
Complimenting his almost do-it-yourself style of recording his albums, Gray's live shows are generally quite sparse with him either on acoustic guitar or piano along with a few other musicians on stage. A consummate and passionate performer he will have you smiling the whole time plus singing along to his sneakily catchy songs. Gray manages to make his live shows feel powerful yet intimate at the same time.
