Despite their very cool name this band hails from Athens, Georgia. Band member Kevin Barnes came up with name after dating a woman from Montreal. Lead singer Barnes started the group in the mid 1990s and of Montreal have undergone some lineup changes over the years with Barnes being the only constant member.
Originally starting off as an indie pop outfit with many sound influences, beginning in 2002 with the release of their fifth album "Aldhils Aboretum" the sound of the band changed to a more danceable one. After releasing some singles from the album and embarking on their first European tour the band's label, Kindercore Records, folded and founding members Derek Almstead and Bryan Poole left the band. But Barnes recruited new members and forged onwards. During this period the band, if you could call it that, was really a solo effort by Kevin Barnes. of Montreal was firmly entrenched in the electronic music sound at this point.
The band's music has gotten plenty of play on television as some of their songs have been used in commercials for T-Mobile, Outback Steakhouse and NASDAQ plus some have been used by television series like "Ugly Betty" and "Weeds".
Presently, while on the road, the band is working on its latest release "False Priest" which they hope to release in the fall of 2010.
