Billed as the largest French film festival in the Americas, Cinemania brings French language films (all subtitled in English) of high quality to Montrealers and gives us the opportunity to see them on the big screen as they were meant to be seen. All films are screening in glorious 35 mm prints.
This is the 16th year that the baby of Maidy Teitelbaum (president and founder) is happening. She started the festival with the aim of bringing together the best French language films and making them accessible to everyone.
At previous editions of the festival films by the likes of Denis Villeneuve, Julian Schnabel, Radu Mihaileanu, and Costa-Gavras have been screened alongside those of young up-and-coming directors. These films have starred the likes of Juliette Binoche, Guillaume Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve.
This year's festival features films by Jacques Rivette, Alain Corneau and Rachid Bouchareb that feature performances by Patrick Bruel, Virginie Ledoyen, Jane Birkin, Isabelle Huppert (who will make an appearance at the festival), Gerard Depardieu (in two films), and Kristen Scott Thomas (in two films). Several of the films this year garnered much buzz at other film festivals like "Outside the Law" at Cannes (there were protest marches about the film before it was even screened), "Leaving" at the Toronto International Film Festival and "Copacabana" at Cannes (the opening film at Cinemania).
No matter what your tendencies or tastes are in regards to film Cinemania will be able to satisfy you. Whether you like romance, comedy, drama or socio-political pictures it is all here at Cinemania.
