This little known opera is making its debut in Quebec. It centers around the much chronicled Elizabeth I (Dimitra Theodossiou) offering a romantic version of the history of England. The year is 1837 and one of Elizabeth I's favourite members of the court, Roberto Devereux (Alexey Dolgov) has betrayed England. Devereux has compounded his mistake by also betraying Elizabeth by taking up with a younger woman named Sarah (Elizabeth Batton). Push comes to shove and Elizabeth I has to decide whether she is going to follow her heart or protect her country and sentence Devereux to death for treason.
The opera affords Montrealers to get to hear Greek diva Dimitra Theodossiou, a woman proficient in the bel cato and Verdi. She is famous throughout Europe. Dimitra's previous roles have included Desdemona in Othello, Violetta in La Traviata and Lady Macbeth in Macbeth. The opera is sung in Italian with English and French subtitles.
