Based on a piece written by one of the premiere talents in Romanticism Johanne Wolfgang von Goethe, Massenet's opera Werther will be the next production presented by L'Opera de Montreal. Wrtiten in 1892 and first performed in Paris in 1893Wrtiten in 1892 and first performed in Paris in 1893. Being done for a baritone, which is rare, the opera is truly a romantic drama. Rising stars Phillip Addis (Werther) and Michèle Losier (Charlotte) will bring their talents to Montreal. Canadian Addis has gained a reputation as a singer with a smooth voice and one who brings a certain sensitivity to the roles he takes on. He has toured throughout Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Japan. Mezzo-soprano Michèle Losier (another Canadian) burst on to the scene in 2007 and has continued to perform on larger and larger stages throughout the world. When she performed as Charlotte in Australia recently critics called her emotionally mature and a virtuoso vocally.
Werther is a young poet who is in love with Charlotte, but she is not free to love him back. Charlotte made a promise to her dying mother that she would marry Albert. To deal with his heartbreak Werther runs off. When he returns it becomes crystal clear very quickly that someone is going to have to die because of this love.
The story is filled with several topics that were taboo in its day, like suicide. Massenet's music is colourful, virtuous and focuses on the simplicity of the voices of the two lovers as opposed to large choruses. Presented twice by L'Opera de Montreal, 1982 and 1994, it is a treat for opera lovers.
Sung in French with English and French subtitles.
