They have been talking about the last two Batman films as if they rescued the series while that might be more right than wrong it has to be remembered that the first four films did gross over $1 billion dollars worldwide. No small potatoes that. Bottom line it is one of the most successful film franchises ever.
It all began around 20 years ago and continues for Batman and his fans. With Christian Bale, George Clooney, Michael Keaton, and Val Kilmer playing the man behind the mask we have had a variety of different takes on the superhero.
Batman directed by Tim Burton:
This was the top-grossing film of 1989 and launched the comic book hero on to the big screen. Gotham City is depicted as a dark and sinister place to live. It needs a hero and Batman (played by Michael Keaton) is that hero. The Caped Crusader has to do battle against a deadly foe in The Joker (played by Jack Nicholson. Vicki Vale (played by Kim Basinger) is a journalist that both men are attracted to. The two powerful men find themselves waging a war on the streets of Gotham City.
Batman Returns directed by Tim Burton:
Batman (Michael Keaton) is back and he has some new villains to battle. He now is challenged by The Penguin (played by Danny DeVito) who feels wronged by his rejection at the hands of Gotham society. Batman really finds his hands are full when he also meets Selina Kyle/Catwoman (played by Michelle Pfeiffer) – a meek and mild secretary who has been transformed into one with the powers and 9 lives of a cat.
Batman Forever directed by Joel Schumacher:
Two more villains emerge to challenge Batman (played by Val Kilmer). Two-Face (played by Tommy Lee Jones) and The Riddler (played by Jim Carrey) test Batman at every turn. This time, however, Batman has a sidekick in Robin (played by Chris O'Donnell) to help him out. Of course, there is a woman in the mix, Dr. Chase Meridian (played by Nicole Kidman), to make things all that much more difficult for the Dark Knight.
Batman & Robin directed by Joel Schumacher:
Batman (played by George Clooney) faces his stiffest competition yet in the villainous duo of Poison Ivy (played by Uma Thurman) and Mr. Freeze (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger). He not only has to battle them but protect his growing number of young sidekicks in Robin (Chris O'Donnell) and Batgirl (played by Alicia Silverstone) who seem to always be in danger.
