As a product of those fun 80s teenage films I always go into more modern teenage films doubting their quality. After watching this film I have to say that it was a lot better than I expected it to be. That despite the fact that Jennifer Love Hewitt is in it.
It is graduation time at Huntingdon Hill High and the senior class is going out with a bang. They are having a huge party, that is. And everyone's going. It is looking to be some night. Miss Perfect Amanda Beckett (Jennifer Love Hewitt – from television's Ghost Whisperer) has recently been dumped by her jock boyfriend, Mike Dexter (Peter Facinelli – Twilight, Hollow Man II). While everyone else is walking on eggshells around her, classmate Preston (Ethan Emby – Vacancy, Eagle Eye), has had a crush on her forever, wants to declare his affections for her at the party. Preston's best friend, Denise (Lauren Ambrose – from television's Six Feet Under), though not thrilled to be there, is with him at the party because she wants to be there to support him when his heart gets trampled on. Kenny Fischler (Seth Green – from television's Family Guy), a grade school friend of Denise's, is going in order to get laid, though with the way he is going about it there is going to be little chance of that happening.
Definitely made with a younger audience in mind, the film really has fun while making no deep statements about life. There are touching moments, but they are really not the good scenes. We are there to watch the hijinx and craziness that happens at this wild party. There are no pretences about it in the least.
Returning to the 80s teen film reference, this film has plenty of homages to various 80s teen films like Sixteen Candles and Say Anything. Along these lines the two directors, Harry Elfront (Josie and the Pussycats) and Deborah Kaplan (Josie and the Pussycats), stick to the tried and true formula of what has worked in regards to teen films in the past. They both obviously are fans of those films.
