This "Animal House" for science buffs follows the story of two best friends, Lewis (Robert Carradine -TV's Lizzi McGuire) and Gilbert (Anthony Edwards – TV's ER, Zodiac), as they begin a new chapter and hopefully leave behind their past as nerds.
The film opens with the two packing up their stuff and kissing their parents goodbye, as they prepare to join the exciting world of college life. Soon after arriving on campus, however, they discover that the jocks rule the school and life will not be as easy as they hoped.
After being kicked out of their dorm, the nerds realize they must take action if they are to stake a claim on campus. Banding together and forming their own fraternity of outcasts, they find the will and the strength to prove once and for all that you should never underestimate a nerd.
I believe the theme song to this cult classic film, performed by The Rubinoos, sums it up best:
"So go ahead, put us down
One of these days we will turn it around
Won't be long, mark my words
Time has come for Revenge of the nerds!"
This DVD release, of this 1984 film, provides an interesting look behind the scenes through interviews with some key cast members. The pilot for the television series, based on the film, gives a glimpse into why it wasn't a success! I was amused by the re-watching of this film, as it was nostalgic for me, but I questions whether "Nerds" will find a new audience on DVD.
