Shelter From the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast

Originally broadcast on the evening of September 9, 2005 by 6 major television stations in the United States, this one hour benefit was put on for the residents of the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to help them financially after the horrible floods. Approximately 23 million people tuned in and $30 million was raised. Now the producers of the show have released a DVD version where profits from the sales go to The Red Cross and The Salvation Army in the United States. When you think of all the money we spend on DVDs just for pure entertainment, well, this DVD gives you two reasons to buy it: entertainment value and its sale benefits those who most need it. The acts, both musical and from Hollywood, who partook in the show were some of the biggest today. There are musical performances by Mariah Carey (her version of "Fly Like a Bird" is a highlight), U2 with Mary J Blige, Sheryl Crow, and Kanye West (thankfully there wasn't a repeat of his statement that 'George Bush doesn't care about black people', which was inappropriate). Those from Hollywood who participated include New Orleans native Ellen DeGeneres, Louisiana native Morgan Freeman, Cameron Diaz, Bruce Willis, Jennifer Aniston, Chris Rock, Jack Black, Ray Romano, Mississippi native Sela Ward, Jack Nicholson, and Southerner Julia Roberts. The clips and photos of the victims backed by music by Tom Waits, Green Day and Coldplay are touching and horrifying.
