Chris Funk (guitar), Jenny Conlee (organ, accordion, piano, keyboards), Nate Query (bass), Colin Meloy (vocals), and John Moen (drums) make up the indie rock band from Portland, Oregon called The Decemberists. They released their debut EP back in 2001 and just this January released their sixth studio album entitled "The King is Dead". This latest album demonstrates influences from blues, folk and Americana.
Musically they can do anything from lavish ballads to uptempo pop numbers. Each of their songs is like a little story. And each story can be funny, epic, dark, or even quirky. Bringing intelligence and social awareness into the mix, the songs usually use some historic event or international flavor within them. Demonstrating the band's affinity for communism they have been known to open their live shows with the Soviet national anthem. Their musical influences range from Death Cab for Cutie to Dokken and on to The Shins and then back to Sleater-Kinney.
