20 Odd Years
Rich Terfry put out his first album 20 years ago. Over the past two decades this (primarily) DJ has released an eccentric and eclectic variety of music. He has always been one part hip hop and one part indie rock. On this he has gotten plenty of guest vocalists from Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie to Jenn Grant and Islands’ Nick Thorburn. Unlike other similar albums featuring guest vocalists this one does not reek of Terfry trying to ride on anyone’s coattails or gain attention through association.
Most of the songs on 20 Odd Years come from the three digital EPs that he put out in 2010, “Avant”, “Distance” and “Abuquerque”. This time around he wanted to do something a little different with them, so he very collaboratively worked on them with fellow musicians. What I noticed right off the hop is that the songs on this album are more melody oriented. I don’t think I am overstating it in saying that this is Buck 65’s first mainstream pop record. The way this guy keeps growing and reinventing himself it makes me wonder what his music is going to be like 20 years from now.
