Since about the midway point of the decade Arctic Monkeys have been one of the more successful indie rock bands to come out of England. Formed in 2002 in a suburb of Sheffield, England the quartet is comprised of Alex Turner (lead vocals, guitar), Jamie Cook (guitar), Nick O’Malley (bass), and Matt Helders (drums).
Since the release of their debut album “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” they have been consistently been on the U.K. charts. Their first album was the fastest selling debut album in British chart history. It won a Mercury Award and a Brit Award and was even nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Album. The album remains their biggest seller.
Success continued with their second album “Favourite Worst Nightmare” released in 2007. It won multiple Brit Awards and was nominated for the Mercury Award. Just this past fall they released their third album called “Humbug”.
The band’s claim to fame (besides their music) is the fact that they were one of the first bands to come to the public’s attention via the internet. Fan-based websites and their MySpace site got tons of hits and really brought attention to the band’s music. Unlike most bands given this opportunity the Arctic Monkeys refused to sign to an established label or change their music to suit the so-called experts’ opinions.
The band’s influences range from classic rock like The Beatles, The Clash and The Smiths to more modern bands like Queens of the Stone Age, The Streets and The Libertines. The album released in the fall of 2009, a heavier darker album, was heavily influenced by the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Cream.
