American singer-songwriter Ray Lamontagne was inspired to become a musician when he was younger after hearing a Stephen Stills song. He quit his job to focus on music and I think that has worked out for him.
Four albums, “Trouble”, “Till the Sun Turns Black”, “Gossip in the Grain”, and “God Willin’ and the Creek Don’t Rise”, have been released by this artist. He has a raspy singing voice that is perfectly suited for the style of music he records. While listening to his music you can understand why he has been compared by critics to Van Morrison, The Band and Tim Buckley. Not in it to make a splash a la Lady Gaga, he has been known to perform in the near dark so as not to be distracted by bright lights and rarely speaks to the audience during shows. He is a very private person and rarely agrees to interviews.
Though he is not exactly a commercial artist he has still gained some notoriety and success. His song “Trouble” has been performed twice on American Idol most recently by Adam Lambert.
