This pop band out of Sweden has fallen off the radar since the release of their monster album “The Sign” in 1993. Looking a bit into it I began to realize that they were the victims of lineup changes. The original band was made up of Ulf Ekberg and three siblings – Jonas Berggren, Malin Berggren and Jenny Berggren. After their big success, in the middle to late 1990s first Malin and then Jenny left the band. That left Jonas and Ulf to find two new singers and then did in 2009 in Clara Hagman and Julia Williamson. Reinvigorated, the band released an album in 2010 called “The Golden Ratio”.
Released in 1993 “The Sign” was one of the biggest debut albums ever by a band. In the U.S. alone it went nine times platinum and spawned 3 Number One singles on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart with “The Sign”, “Don’t Turn Around” and “All That She Wants”. Their follow up album which contained a totally different sound was released one year later, “The Bridge”, and had two hit singles in “Lucky Love” and “Beautiful Life”.
Over the course of their first four albums they had sold 30 million copies worldwide. Ace of Base was hugely successful.
After going on hiatus early on in the 21st century and then releasing an unsuccessful album the band broke up. Well, not really as Jonas and Ulf just recruited two new female singers. They also slightly altered the name of the band to Ace.Of.Base.
Though you might not believe it artists like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga have both cited the Swedish pop band as an influence on their music.
