Ottawa native Kathleen Edwards has very quietly constructed an enviable career. Fans like her and critics love her. What more could one ask for?
As the child of a diplomat, Kathleen grew up around the world. Musically she started with classical violin lessons at the age of five. As a young girl she listened to artists like Tom Petty, Neil Young and Bob Dylan. After graduating from high school she decided that education wasn’t for her and began playing gigs around Ottawa.
Releasing her first EP in 1999 entitled Building 55, her career has grown slowly but surely ever since. Releasing her debut full-length album in 2003, playing SXSW, appearing on The Late Show with David Lettermana, being named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the more promising new acts, and being raved about in The New York Times got the ball rolling. And it continued rolling down hill.
Her fourth studio album, Voyageur, was just released this January. The album was co-produced by her boyfriend Justin Vernon, lead singer of Bon Iver.
