California born emerging electronic artist Skrillex had his official coming out party at this year’s Grammy Awards. He won several awards which caused people to sit up and take notice. I’m sure there were a lot of “Who is this guy?” looks on people’s faces when his name was read out. Skrillex (real name is Sonny Moore) says that electronic artists like Prodigy and Aphex Twin were early influences on him as well as rock artists like Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails. This EP is his third release with the other two, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites and More Monsters and Sprites, were very successful (hence the five Grammy nominations and wins). Though he is marketed as an electronic artist, Skrillex is difficult to pigeonhole into any one musical genre. His music and influences are all over the place. What you can say with certainty about his music is that the guy certainly knows how to create a flow. From start to finish Bangarang seamlessly moves from one track to the next. The energy remains high throughout and will cause parts of your body to be moving continuously. What Skrillex is very good at is creating layers within his music and using them to create one harmonious sound. He layers vocals and instruments into a melody and the result is one heck of a lot of fun to listen to.
