Everyone has their own personal taste when it comes to comedy. Like art, comedy is quite subjective. One of the most challenging things for a standup comedian is to find a whole bunch of people who think you’re funny. For every Eddie Izzard or Jerry Seinfeld there are hundreds that work anonymously. American comedian Jo Koy is moving closer to the top of the heap with each time I see him. He has built up quite a CV with appearances on Late Call with Carson Daly, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Jamie Foxx Presents: Laffapalooza.
The chrome domed comedian is intelligent, active, sly, crass, and just downright hilarious on stage. His latest (and second) Comedy Central special is called Lights Out. It was filmed at the Alex Theatre in the Glendale area of his hometown of Los Angeles. Frequent Chelsea Lately panel guest Jo is Filipino and much of his humour comes from his impersonations of his mother (a tiny Filipino woman who brought up a couple kids on her own as a new immigrant to the U.S.), a very strong and funny woman.
Besides his mother, Jo also covers the topics of kids and fatherhood (he has shared custody of his young son), his sleep apnea and even the weather. Yes, this guy is talented enough to make the most mundane of subjects like the weather funny. I have to say that my funny bone was tickled more often than not.
The show is extended and uncensored from what people saw on Comedy Central. Bonus! More laughs!
